db_free_solr is an extension to (and still requires the installation of) the acts_as_solr full text index search plugin. It was born out of a desire to take better advantage of the underlying Solr engine's capabilities and reduce the amount of database hits that searching under the original plugin required.
A plugin that enables the programmer to easily extend an STI subclass with another model (that, in theory, contains subclass specific fields), allowing the DB to be more normalized, while not giving up the ease and benefits of Rails STI.
