Static assets, browser caches, HTTP headers which are an utter mess, CDNs and changing designs on websites... it all adds up to create an utter mess for anyone trying to deploy major changes to UI components of a website. CLS has built a customization which we include on all of our builds to version the combined CSS/JS assets used on a site (unfortunately it's not isolated and wouldn't make a good base for this). This has proved to be a major help. No waiting on a CDN to purge itself and no wondering how many clients are still seeing an old CSS file which may no longer match the current DOM structure. Extending this to reach all assets would be a stellar addition to core and benefit all merchants. Even something as simple as a timestamp stored in a cache record and then included URLs spit out to browsers would be an improvement. The trick is figuring out what method to use which works across all asset types, is compatible with origin CDN setups and is also reliable.

Magento's image helper is bloated and the performance impact is quite significant. Some of the complexity can also be removed because the gain is not that significant (example: the hash part of the image url). I would like to be able to use a replacement with the following features: - lightweight - support for gd and imagemagick - has nicer image paths Optional: - use a queueing system for the resize job If others are interested we can spec this out further. Mainly for performance research I would like to have a real real big dataset which covers all imaginably performance edge cases. some of them are: * many many categories whith more then 5 levels of depth. lets say 1k+ categories * configurable products with several options ( in the end 1 configurable = 10k+ simples {20×10×4×6×3}) * multiple websites/stores/storeviews ( should end in 1k storeviews ) Its ok(and suggested) if it ends in a script, which randomly creates this into files readable by an Importer, as this would speed up the generation and the importer can care in the end of optimize the saving to magento.
