It is convenient to regard a source program statement as a sequence of tokens rather than simply a set of characters. Tokens may be thought of as the fundamental building blocks of the language. For example; a token might be a keyword, a variable name, an integer, an arithmetic operator, etc. the task of scanning the source statement, recognizing & classifying the various tokens is termed as LEXICAL ANALYSIS. The part of the compiler that performs this analytic function is commonly called the SCANNER.
